Scientists Discover Role Of APP In The Brain

AsianScientist (Apr. 23, 2014)  – A research team in Singapore has uncovered a novel function of the amyloid precursor protein (APP), one of the main pathogenic culprits of Alzheimer’s disease. The study, published in  Nature Communications , was led by Dr. Zeng Li at the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) in Singapore, and involved investigators from Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and the Agency for Science and Technology (A*STAR). Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. While the exact cause of Alzheimer’s disease remains unknown, one of its pathological hallmarks – the clumping of APP product in the brain when the protein is abnormally processed – is clear. However, up till this point, little was known about the APP’s primary function in the brain. In the study, Zeng and her team discovered that APP can control the growth and maturation of newborn brain cells, which are critical for the maintenance of a healthy brain function. APP does this by regulating

http://sleepfoundation.org/how-sleep-works/how-much-sleep-do-we-really-need Sleep needs vary across ages and are especially impacted by lifestyle and health. Thus, to determine how much sleep you need, it's important to assess not only where you fall on the "sleep needs spectrum," but also to examine what lifestyle factors are affecting the quality and quantity of your sleep such as work schedules and stress. To get the sleep you need, you must look at the big picture. Though research cannot pinpoint an  exact  amount of sleep need by people at different ages, the preceding table identifies the "rule-of-thumb" amounts most experts have agreed upon. Nevertheless, it's important to pay attention to your own individual needs by assessing how you feel on different amounts of sleep. Are you productive, healthy and happy on seven hours of sleep? Or does it take you nine hours of quality ZZZs to get you into high gear? Do you have health issues such as being o

Trans Fats 101

Increase your understanding of trans fatty acids -- harmful artificial fats that the Federal Government now requires to appear on nutrition labels -- with the help of University of Maryland Medical Center registered dietitian Mary Beth Sodus. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration shed light on a potentially serious health threat recently when it announced that products containing trans fatty acids require stringent nutritional labeling starting in 2006. And one city in the U.S. has gone further. In December 2006, New York City became the first city in the nation to ban artificial trans fats at all restaurants. Restaurants in the city will be required to eliminate the artificial trans fats from all of their foods by July 2008. Trans fats are artificial fats made when hydrogen gas reacts with oil. They can be found in cookies, crackers, icing, potato chips, margarine and microwave popcorn.Trans fats can be natural or artificial. Small amounts of trans fat occur naturally in beef an
